Abhiśruti transformation of earlier বইন (boin), h-dropped form of an even earlier বহিন (bohin), from Magadhi Prakrit *𑀩𑀳𑀺𑀡𑀻 (*bahiṇī), from Sanskrit *बघिनी (baghinī). Doublet of ভগিনী (bhogini).
