Inherited from Prakrit *𑀪𑀸𑀅𑀲𑀼𑀭 (*bhāasura), syncopated from earlier *𑀪𑀸𑀢𑀲𑀲𑀼𑀭 (*bhātasasura), from Sanskrit भ्रातृश्वशुर (bhrātṛśvaśura, husband's eldest brother), from भ्रातृ (bhrātṛ, brother) +‎ श्वशुर (śvaśura, father-in-law). Cognate with Bhojpuri भसुर (bhasur), Hindi भाँसुर (bhā̃sur​).
