Etymology edit
Inherited from Old Bengali মাচ্ছি (mācchi), from Sanskrit मक्षि (makṣi). Cognate with Chittagonian মাস়ি, Sylheti ꠝꠣꠌꠍꠤ (massí), Assamese মাখি (makhi) and Hindi मक्खी (makkhī). Doublet of মশা (mośa).
