Inherited from Magadhi Prakrit 𑀰𑀼𑀡𑁂𑀤𑀺 (śuṇedi), from Sanskrit शृणोति (śṛṇoti), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *śr̥náwti, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ćr̥náwti, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱl̥néwti, from *ḱlew-. Cognate with Old English hlysnan (whence English listen).
