Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀞𑀓𑁆𑀓𑀼𑀭 (ṭhakkura), from Sanskrit ठक्कुर (ṭhakkura), possibly ultimately a substrate word. Cognate with Hindi ठाकुर (ṭhākur), Marathi ठाकूर (ṭhākūr), Nepali ठाकुर् (ṭhākur), Odia ଠାକୁର (ṭhakurô),Punjabi ਠਾਕਰ (ṭhākar).
