Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀡𑀺𑀪𑀸𑀮𑁂𑀤𑀺 (ṇibhāledi), from Sanskrit निभालयति (nibhālayati, “to see, perceive”). Cognate with Bengali নিহারা (nihara), Hindi निहारना (nihārnā), Marathi निहाळणें (nihāḷṇẽ), and Sindhi نِهارَڻُ (nihāraṇu).
