Inherited from Old Gujarati माछली (māchalī), from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀫𑀘𑁆𑀙 (maccha) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀮𑁆𑀮𑁆- (-ll-), from Ashokan Prakrit 𑀫𑀙 (macha /maccha/), from Sanskrit मत्स्य (mátsya), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *mátsyas. Doublet of માહી (māhī), મચ્છ (macch), માછ (māch), and મત્સ્ય (matsya).
