From Proto-Tai *C̥.boŋꟲ (“caterpillar”). Cognate with Lao ບົ້ງ (bong), Shan မူင်ႈ (mūung) or ဝူင်ႈ (wūung), Ahom 𑜈𑜢𑜤𑜂𑜫 (büṅ), Zhuang mbungq (“butterfly”).
