From Proto-Southwestern Tai *pliwᴬ² (“to float in the air”). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨸᩖᩥᩅ, Lao ປິວ (piu), Lü ᦔᦲᧁ (ṗiiw), Shan ပိဝ် (pǐo), Tai Dam ꪜꪲꪫ, Tai Dón ꪜꪲꪫ, Phake ပိဝ် (piw), Ahom 𑜆𑜢𑜈𑜫 (piw), Zuojiang Zhuang bieu.
