From Sanskrit आचार्य (ācārya, teacher; preceptor); perhaps via Old Khmer ʼācāryya, ʼācārya (teacher, instructor; spiritual preceptor; expert). Cognate with Modern Khmer អាចារ្យ (ʼaacaa), អាចរិយ (ʼaacaʼreyaʼ); Lao ອາຈານ (ʼā chān).
