From Proto-Tai *C̥.bawᴬ (light (in weight)). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨷᩮᩢᩤ, Lao ເບົາ (bao), ᦢᧁ (ḃaw), Khün ᨷᩮᩢᩤ, Shan မဝ် (mǎo) or ဝဝ် (wǎo), Tai Nüa ᥛᥝ (maw), Ahom 𑜉𑜨𑜧 (mow), Zhuang mbaeu, Nong Zhuang nawj, Saek เว๋า.
