From Proto-Tai *plɤwᴮ (empty). Cognate with Lao ເປົ່າ (pao), Northern Thai ᨸᩖᩮᩢ᩵ᩣ (paw), ᦔᧁᧈ (ṗaw¹), Shan ပဝ်ႇ (pào), Ahom 𑜆𑜧 (paw) or 𑜆𑜨𑜧 (pow).
