From Proto-Southwestern Tai *pʰɯəkᴰ¹ᴸ (taro), from Proto-Tai *prɯəkᴰ (taro). Cognate with Lao ເຜືອກ (phư̄ak), Shan ၽိူၵ်ႇ (phòek), Tai Nüa ᥚᥫᥐᥱ (phǒek), Ahom 𑜇𑜢𑜤𑜀𑜫 (phük), Zhuang biek. Compare Sui qxgaags (taro), Proto-Hlai *hraːk (taro) and Proto-Austronesian *biʀaq (whence Paiwan viaq, Malay birah).
