From Old Mon ဗၜေအ် (baṗeʼ), from Proto-Mon-Khmer *bəɓeʔ (goat), of onomatopoeic origin. Cognate with Khmer ពពែ (pɔpɛɛ), Mon ဗ္ၜေံ, Chong แพ่ะ, Thai แพะ (pɛ́).
