From Proto-Southwestern Tai *ʰɲaj/aɰᴮ¹ (big; to grow large). Cognate with Northern Thai ᩉ᩠ᨿᩱ᩵ or ᩉ᩠ᨿᩲ᩵, Lao ໃຫຍ່ (nyai), ᦺᦊᧈ (ẏay¹), Tai Dam ꪻꪐ꪿, Shan ယႂ်ႇ (yàue), Ahom 𑜐𑜧 (ñaw), 𑜊𑜨𑜧 (jʸow) or 𑜊𑜧𑜤 (jʸawu).
