Possibly borrowed from Middle Khmer *សេយ្យ (*seyya), សយ្យ (sayya, “excellent”), from Pali seyya (“better; excellent”). Compare Sanskrit श्रेयस् (śreyas). Cognate with Khmer សៃយ (say).
