From Proto-Tibeto-Burman *s-kawŋ (hollow, hollow object, head); cognate with Lahu [script needed] (qo¹¹, cave, hole). Said Tibeto-Burman root is allofamically related to Proto-Sino-Tibetan *(g/k)uŋ (hole; orifice; inner part), whence Old Chinese (OC *kʰoːŋ, *kʰoːŋs, “empty; space”); see there for more cognates (STEDT).
