Inherited from Old Burmese ရိယ် (riy), from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *rəj (water; liquid; body fluid). Cognate with Pela ɣəi⁵⁵, Tangut 𗋽 (*zjɨ̱r²), and Tshangla ri¹³.
