Inherited from Old Burmese လှိယ် (lhiy), from Proto-Sino-Tibetan. Cognate with Jingpho li (boat), Naxi leeq, S'gaw Karen ချံ (khlee). Compare Middle Chinese 䑴艃 (“a boat, a ship, vessel”).
