From Old Georgian *გამარჯუებაჲ (*gamarǯuebay) attested as გამარჯუებული (gamarǯuebuli), likely from მარჯუჱ (marǯuē), from Proto-Kartvelian *marǯw- (to conquer, overcome), from *rǯw-, whence also მარჯვენა (marǯvena).
