Etymology

From Proto-Kartvelian *okro- (“gold”).

Alternatively, the word may derive from Ancient Greek ὠχρός (ōkhrós, “pale, wan; pale-yellow, sallow; yolk; colour yellow”), meaning the cognates (see ოქრო (okro)) could be borrowings from Georgian.
