Cherokee edit

Etymology edit

From English automobile.

Pronunciation edit

IPA(key): /òːdàːmòːɡʷǐːlĩ̀/, (anglicized) /òːdàːmòːpǐːlĩ̀/

Noun edit

ᎣᏓᎼᏈᎵ (odamoquili)

  1. automobile

Usage notes edit

  • Bilabial stops, such as /b/ and /p/, do not natively occur in Cherokee. As such, when foreign words with these sounds are borrowed into Cherokee, they are adapted as labial velars /ɡʷ/ or /kʷʰ/. Regardless, many Cherokee speakers continue to use the unadapted pronunciation, especially with more recent loanwords.
