From earlier ᚠᚨᛁᚺᛁᛞᛟ (faihido), from Proto-Germanic *faihidǭ, 1st singular past indicative of *faihijaną (“to paint”). The development of aih to ah āh brings the word one step closer to the Old Icelandic fáða.
