Khmer edit

Etymology edit

Derived from កាង (kaang, to extend to the side) with infixed -h-. Compare similar derivation in ឃាំង (khĕəng, to obstruct) from គាំង (kĕəng, to be stuck). Possibly related to Proto-Mon-Khmer *ɟkaiŋ (side, edge), Tampuan kɛɛŋ (side), Eastern Lawa kaŋ (side, to spread), Thavung cakɛ̀ːŋ/cakhɛ̀ːŋ (to lean to one side, side). See also similar forms in Tai, including ข้าง (kâang, side).
