Proposed to be derived from Proto-Yoruba *ụ̀-ghá, ultimately from Proto-Edekiri *ụ̀-ghá. The term is also related to the word for rib in many Yoruboid dialects, see ùwá in Ijebu and ìghághè in Oǹdó
