Ancient Greek edit

Etymology edit

One suggests contamination form of λύγξ (lúnx, hiccup) and another word, like ἀλύω (alúō, to be deeply stirred, excited) or ἀλάομαι (aláomai, to wander, roam); this is not very convincing. According to Beekes, it is rather a primary onomatopoeic formation, with the Pre-Greek suffix -υγγ-.
