ἀλάλυγξ
Ancient Greek edit
Etymology edit
One suggests contamination form of λύγξ (lúnx, “hiccup”) and another word, like ἀλύω (alúō, “to be deeply stirred, excited”) or ἀλάομαι (aláomai, “to wander, roam”); this is not very convincing. According to Beekes, it is rather a primary onomatopoeic formation, with the Pre-Greek suffix -υγγ-.
