Ancient Greek edit

Etymology edit

Connection of -ωΐς with Lithuanian úosis (ash tree) is most improbable. Derivation from Ἀχέρων (Akhérōn) is a mere formal guess. The stem suggests a Pre-Greek word.

Pronunciation edit

Noun edit

ἀχερωΐς (akherōḯsf (genitive ἀχερωΐδος); third declension

  1. white poplar (Populus alba)
    Synonyms: λεύκη (leúkē), λῠ́γδη (lúgdē)
