Ancient Greek edit

Etymology edit

Unknown. Schwyzer suggested a relation with ἄρδω (árdō, to irrigate), with a suffix -σος like in ἄλσος (álsos, grove). The suffix -σος, however, may be a substrate element. Gusmani compares Hittite [script needed] (arši, plantation).

Pronunciation edit

  1. Hesychius' gives the definition as: λειμῶνες (leimônes, meadows).
