From ἄψ (áps, back, back again) plus an uncertain verbal root, possibly Proto-Indo-European *h₃er- (to move) (compare ὄρνῡμι (órnūmi)) or *h₁ers- (to flow) (compare Latin errō (to wander, get lost) and Gothic 𐌰𐌹𐍂𐌶𐌾𐌰𐌽 (airzjan, to mislead)).
