Etymology edit

From Old Persian *Arta-bānu or *Artabānuš (literally The glory of Arta),[1] from *ṛta- (Arta) + *bānu- (beam, lustre, light), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hr̥tás (truth) and *bʰaHnúš (ray of light), respectively. Compare Sanskrit ऋत (ṛta, order, rule; truth; logos) and भानु (bhānu, ray of light; brightness, splendor).

Cognate with Old Armenian Արտաւան (Artawan), Parthian 𐭏𐭓𐭕𐭁𐭍𐭅 (ʿrtbnw), Middle Persian [script needed] ('rtw'n).
