Etymology edit

Per Beeks, derived from the root *(H)yeh₁- (to throw), equivalent to ἵημι (híēmi) +‎ -σμός (-smós). Others derive from the root *sed- (to sit), equivalent to ἕζομαι (hézomai) +‎ -μος (-mos).
