Etymology edit

No agreement outside Greek. It was connected with ῥίπτω (rhíptō, to throw, hurl) long ago, assuming a basic meaning "turn, wind" for both. However, this connection fails due to the weak semantics.

Pronunciation edit

Noun edit

ῥίψ (rhípsf (genitive ῥῑπός); third declension

  1. mat, wickerwork, wattle, plaited work of osiers or rushes
