Etymology

From ばかり (bakari, only) +  (ka).

ばかりか (bakari ka)

  1. not only
    祖父ばかりか、曽祖父さえ生きている。
    そふばかりかそうそふさえいきている。
    Sofu bakari ka, sōsofu sae ikite iru.
    Not only is my grandfather living but my great-grandfather as well.

Usage notes

  • The term ばかりか (bakari ka) may be accompanied by さえ (sae) to indicate an unexpected occurrence. The Kanji form 許りか is less commonly used.
