     ８８(はちじゅうはち)年(ねん)５(ご)月(がつ)、フランスのアルジャンティエール氷(ひょう)河(が)からシャルドネのコル（鞍(あん)部(ぶ)）へと、ザイルを頼(たよ)りに、ピッケルとアイゼンを使(つか)って菊(きく)池(ち)さんは登(とう)攀(はん)していた。すると、壁(かべ)のような斜(しゃ)面(めん)に美(うつく)しいシュプールが刻(きざ)まれていた。

     In May 1988, Kikuchi climbed from France’s Argentière glacier to the col (saddle) of Chardonnay, relying on ropes and using ice axes and crampons. Then, he carved a beautiful spur with his skis down the wall-like slope.
