First appears in reference to Japanese grammar in the 1874 book 小学日本文典 (Shōgaku Nihon Bunten, Elementary Japan Grammar Book) by 田中義廉 (Tanaka Yoshikado).[1] Influenced by, and possibly a partial calque of English part of speech, French partie du discours, or Dutch woordsoort (literally word sort).[2]
