Etymology edit
Compound of 唖 (a, “dumb”) + 鈴 (rei, “bell”), calque of English dumbbell. Used by Isawa Shūji (伊沢修二) in 『教育学』 (Kyōikugaku [Pedagogy], 1882).[1]
