Compound of (だい) (dai-, big, large, greater) + (とう)() (Tōa, East Asia) + (きょう)(えい) (kyōei, thriving together, co-prosperity) + (けん) (ken, bounded area, sphere, region).

A slogan promulgated during World War II by the Japanese government and military used as a means to rationalize rule over Asia.
