Etymology edit
Compound of 撒き (maki, 連用形 (ren'yōkei, “stem or continuative form”) of the verb 撒く (maku, “to scatter, to cast, to sow”).) + 菱 (hishi, “a water chestnut; the rhomboid shape of a water chestnut; a caltrop”). The hishi changes to bishi as an instance of rendaku (連濁).
