Unknown; probably not directly from Korean 동래(東萊) (dongnae), as the phonetics are problematic.

Perhaps from Early Modern Korean *동령(東令) (*twonglyeng), a shortening of 동ᄅᆡ 령감(東萊令監) (twongloy lyengkam), referring to government officials from Dongnae.
