Usage notes edit

“To lay or place a smokescreen” is expressed in Japanese using the verb 張る (haru, to stretch taut), probably in reference to the curtain meaning expressed by the (maku) character.

攻撃(こうげき)困難(こんなん)にするために煙幕(えんまく)()
kōgeki o konnan ni suru tame ni enmaku o haru
place a smokescreen to make it difficult to attack [us]

Also used in a figurative sense.
