Pronunciation edit

Noun edit

  1. (Hokkien, Hakka) gambling, bet
Usage notes edit
  • In Hokkien, both and (TRC) are phonetic (and/or partially semantic) loans.[1][2]
  • The Taiwanese–Japanese dictioary (1931) uses the semantic loan (kiáu) and argues that (kiáu) might be its etymon.[3]
  • can collocate with the verb (poa̍h) in Hokkien and with the verb () in Hakka. The two verbs can also be used independantly, meaning "to gamble".
