Shortened from Japanese ()(れん)(こう) (Karenkō), from Hokkien 洄瀾洄澜 (Hôe-liân) during Qing-era settlement in 1851. Formerly named 奇萊奇莱 (Kî-lâi), referring to the Sakiraya Taiwanese aborigines and their settlement.
