Glyph origin edit

Historical forms of the character
Shuowen Jiezi (compiled in Han)
Small seal script

Phono-semantic compound (形聲形声, OC *luʔ): semantic (word, language) + phonetic (OC *slus).

Etymology edit

Possibly Proto-Sino-Tibetan *b-s-lu (STEDT) and cognate to Tibetan སླུས (slus, to entice; to impose on; to deceive). The character (yòu) would have been phonetically closer to (OC *l'uːnʔ, *ɦljunʔ) ~ /*slun/ at an early stage, which might have been an internal cognate, but it was normalized as an alternative form of (yòu) by later lexicographers. Also related to (OC *slud). (Wang, 2012)
