Etymology edit
From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *t(j)a-n ⪤ *tsa-n (“red”) (STEDT); cognate with Burmese တာ (ta, “red”) (as in Burmese နီတာရဲ (nitarai:, “of loud red color”)) and Burmese တျာတျာ (tya-tya, “scarlet”). According to Schuessler (2007), 朱 (OC *tjo) may be related.
