|Kanji in this term|
雷神鳥, a calque of English thunderbird. This term is built from the components 雷神 (raijin, “thunder god”) + 鳥 (chō, “bird”) rather than the expected 雷 (rai, “thunder”) + 鳥 (chō, “bird”) because the term 雷鳥 had already been used to mean rock ptarmigan, a type of snow grouse native to Japan.
雷神鳥 (hiragana らいじんちょう, romaji raijinchō)
The term サンダーバード (sandābādo) is more commonly used as a translation for the English term thunderbird.
