Korean edit

Etymology edit

First attested in the Yongbi eocheon'ga (龍飛御天歌 / 용비어천가), 1447, as Middle Korean 밀〯다〮 (Yale: mǐl-tá).

However, placename glosses in the Samguk sagi (Chapter 34) imply that a native Korean word with the phonetic value of () (Middle Chinese /mˠiɪt̚/, Middle Sino-Korean míl) was considered equivalent to Chinese (tuī) "to push" as early as 757.

Pronunciation edit

  • (SK Standard/Seoul) IPA(key): [ˈmi(ː)ɭda̠]
  • Phonetic hangul: [(ː)]
    • Though still prescribed in Standard Korean, most speakers in both Koreas no longer distinguish vowel length.
