Etymology edit

First attested in the Neung'eomgyeong eonhae (楞嚴經諺解 / 능엄경언해), 1461, as Middle Korean 비ᄅᆞᆺ〮다〮 (Yale: pìlóstá). Also attested in the "Seonsangtan" (船上嘆 / 선상탄), 1605, as Early Modern Korean 비ᄅᆞᆺ하다 (Yale: piloshata).

From 비ᄅᆞᆺ (pilos-, to begin) +‎ ᄒᆞ다 (-hota, light verb deriving active verbs).
