First attested in the Yongbi eocheon'ga (龍飛御天歌 / 용비어천가), 1447, as Middle Korean 스〮ᄀᆞᄫᆞᆯ (Yale: súkòWòl), a compound of 스〮 (Yale: sú, meaning unknown) + *고ᄫᆞᆶ (Yale: *kòWòlh, “town, district”) > modern 고을 (go'eul).
