Etymology edit

From Proto-West Semitic *biʾrāt- (wells). Cognate with Biblical Hebrew בְּאֵרוֹת (bəʾērōṯ). Compare Akkadian 𒁁𒊒𒋫 (/⁠bērūta⁠/, Beirut) and Egyptian brt (Beirut), both borrowed from a Canaanite language ancestral to Phoenician in the 2nd millennium BC.
