From Proto-Semitic *yatam- (to be fatherless or without a guardian, to be without support of family or tribe, to be disenfranchised or alone). Cognate with Arabic يَتِيم (yatīm), Aramaic יַתְמָא (yaṯmā), Classical Syriac ܝܲܬ݂ܡܵܐ (yaṯmā), Classical Mandaic ࡉࡀࡕࡉࡌࡀ (yatima), Hebrew יָתוֹם (yatóm), Tigre ያፓም (yattam), Ugaritic 𐎊𐎚𐎎 (ytm).
